  1. Game and second set - Sinnerpublished at 10:43 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

    Sinner 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 0-0 Shelton

Ben Shelton could do with a bit of good luck, but I don't think seagull droppings are what he had in mind. Fortunately, it just about misses him.

And there's no letting up from Jannik Sinner, who wraps up the set with a bruising ace.

The top seed is one set away from a second straight final in Melbourne.

    *Sinner 7-6 (7-2) 5-2 Shelton

A fist pump and a word of encouragement from Bryan Shelton towards his son as Jannik Sinner loops a lob long.

And there's a massive 129mph ace to see the 21st seed through and delay a third set for at least another while.

Ben Shelton is looking rather dejected out there. That was a poor attempt at a drop shot and it brings up a set point for Jannik Sinner.

Where does Ben Shelton go from here?

I don't think his game plan is that far off really. He has been mixing it up, doing this and that, but I think he probably got into too many rallies at the end of the first set and the beginning of this second set.

He tried to unsettle Jannik Sinner, but he was always going to settle bit-by-bit so that's even more of a reason to mix up the play.

When was the last volley we saw from Shelton?

    Sinner 7-6 (7-2) 5-1 Shelton*

Just too much power from Jannik Sinner for Ben Shelton to handle and it's a comfortable hold for the defending champion.

  7. Shelton holdspublished at 10:29 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

    *Sinner 7-6 (7-2) 4-1 Shelton

Jannik Sinner has to dig deep to get that serve back over, but he's left himself flat-footed and unable to move to meet a forehand winner from Ben Shelton, whose serve proves too much again for the Italian on the next point.

The young American is on the board in this second set and he ends a five-game winning streak for Sinner.

  8. Deuce on Shelton's servepublished at 10:27 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

Ben Shelton recovers momentarily with Jannik Sinner unable to reply to a 130mph serve, but there's another unforced error and we go to deuce.

It's all going a bit pear-shaped for Ben Shelton.

  11. Sinner a double break up in second setpublished at 10:23 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

    *Sinner 7-6 (7-2) 3-0 Shelton

That's a bad, bad miss. Ben Shelton is gifting Jannik Sinner these breaks.

If he can cut out those unforced errors, Shelton would be causing Sinner all sorts of problems but at the moment it's all looking rather simple for the world number one.

  12. Break point Sinnerpublished at 10:20 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

    Sinner 7-6 (7-2) 2-0 Shelton*

    Sinner 7-6 (7-2) 2-0 Shelton*

Jannik Sinner can't recover from that angled backhand from Ben Shelton, and he loops the ball high and long.

But Shelton can't wriggle free and he's under pressure again as he finds the fence. Deuce.

A brilliant return down the line claws a point back for Jannik Sinner before Ben Shelton helps the Italian draw level at 30-30 with another poor miss.

  16. Deuce on Sinner's servepublished at 10:15 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

    *Sinner 7-6 (7-2) 1-0 Shelton

What a rally, and what a get that is from Ben Shelton as he gets low to lift over a fierce hit from Jannik Sinner.

The defending champion really should wrap up the hold, but he goes long as he attempts to fire a forehand winner down the line.

  17. Deuce on Sinner's servepublished at 10:13 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

    *Sinner 7-6 (7-2) 1-0 Shelton

Deary me. Ben Shelton had taken total control of that point but just as he's about to put an end to things, he goes wide. Another bad miss.

Jannik Sinner goes for power, but he's put too much on that ball and it plants straight into the net.

Can Ben Shelton make the most of the Italian's mistake to break back?

  19. Deuce on Sinner's servepublished at 10:11 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

    *Sinner 7-6 (7-2) 1-0 Shelton

Jannik Sinner looked like he had that service game in the bag at 40-15, but Ben Shelton works his way back to force deuce.

Jannik Sinner hits like Novak Djokovic but with a bit more power - is that even possible?

It is like Novak's hits with another 10 percent on it.

We will have to ask Alex de Minaur how he is feeling after playing against him.
