Not perfect from Aryna Sabalenka but it's a victory nonetheless.

She's now being forced to partake in a little dance on court and to be honest, she looks mortified.

Stephens did what she could here really, except for those first three games in the first set, but it has been a very confident performance from Sabalenka.

I was a little bit surprised with Stephens' approach in the first few games.

You haven't won a match in a long time, you are playing the number one in the world, at least show a lot of energy in-between the points and try to make the match physical, if nothing else.

It is Jessica Bouzas Maneiro who makes it through to round two on her Australian Open debut.

The Spaniard eventually ends the admirable resistance of Sonay Kartal after struggling to close out the match against the stubborn Briton.

A meeting with world number one Aryna Sabalenka could be her reward.

    Sabalenka 6-3 1-1 Stephens*

Sloane Stephens has been a pretty composed figure out on court but we're starting to see a bit more animation from the American.

You can see just how hard she's having to graft for these points and she sends one long to give Aryna Sabalenka three break points.

This has been impressively gritty from Kartal to put herself into this position.

Bouzas Maneiro is not striking the ball as much as she was earlier, true.

But Kartal has still done well to hang tough and give herself a chance of levelling the match.

  19. Tie-breakpublished at 09:05 Greenwich Mean Time

    Kartal 1-6 6-6 (4-3) Bouzas Maneiro*

Into the net by Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and Sonay Kartal has the opportunity to take control of the tie-break on serve.

While the Briton has cut down on her errors, they continue to come from the racquet of Bouzas Maneiro and the Spaniard overhits on the run for 4-2, but Kartal is unable to build on her two-point lead.

  20. Tie-breakpublished at 09:01 Greenwich Mean Time

    Kartal 1-6 6-6 (2-1) Bouzas Maneiro*

This is anybody's set now, something which seemed very unlikely when Jessica Bouzas Maneiro led 6-1 4-1, and again when the Spaniard brought up her first match point.

A loose forehand by Bouzas Maneiro gives Kartal a narrow advantage after three points.
