Aileen Morrison hopes to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games in London

Aileen Morrison produced one of the best performances of her career on Sunday to finish second in the World Cup event at Ishigaki in Japan.

The Londonderry woman finished ahead of three-time Olympic champion Kiyomi Niwata, who made a late charge to claim the bronze medal.

Morrison pulled away from the bunch in the final cycling lap to secure another world cup podium.

"It was fantastic and I was delighted to stand on the podium." she said.

She added: "It was a lovely place to do a race, in Ishigaki. Fantastic people, fantastic course. It was really hard, yet I loved it and I am delighted I finished second."

Morrison's performance will have given her a confidence boost as she continues her preparations for the London 2012 Olympics.

The second place follows her victory in the ETU European Cup triathlon in Turkey earlier this month.
