Jonny Brownlee claims World Triathlon Series win in Madrid

Defending world champion Jonny Brownlee won his second successive World Triathlon Series event in Madrid.

The 23-year-old Briton, who missed the first two events of the season with injury, followed up his win in Yokohama with victory in one hour, 50 minutes and 42 seconds.

Olympic silver medallist Javier Gomez of Spain was 50 seconds down in second while Russian Ivan Vasiliev was third.

"It's a good course, a pure one. It was a tough and fair race," said Brownlee.

The London 2012 bronze medallist was part of a five-man group which broke away during the bike ride, before immediately opening a gap on home favourite Gomez on the run.

"At the top of the hill on the second lap [of the bike] I said to Gomez 'let's go for it' but he showed his experience and said let's wait," said Brownlee.

"If we'd have gone we would probably have been caught so credit to him there."

Second place for Gomez, 30, saw him overtake Joao Silva of Portugal in the overall standings, with the next event in Kitzbuhel, Austria in July.

"I did the best I could - I knew I wasn't fresh," said Gomez.

"On the run I knew I wasn't able to run with Jonathan. Second was the best I could do."

Brownlee is in sixth place with four events - including the Grand Final in London - to go. The champion is decided based on competitors' best four World Series finishes plus their Grand Final result.

The winner of a World Series event gets 800 points, second place 740 and third 685, while higher points are on offer in the Grand Final, with the victor picking up 1,200 points.

Brownlee's older brother Alistair, who is the Olympic champion, was absent from the Madrid leg because of an ankle injury.

Britain's David McNamee was 15th in Sunday's race, while Saturday's women's race was won by Non Stanford, with fellow Briton Jodie Stimpson third.
