Alistair Brownlee wins Cape Town World Triathlon Series event

Great Britain's Alistair Brownlee returned from injury to win the World Triathlon Series event in Cape Town.

The 27-year-old Olympic champion missed the first three events of the season with an ankle problem.

But he overcame a fall on the second lap of the run to take gold in one hour 39 minutes and 20 seconds.

With brother Jonathan Brownlee missing the round, Spain's Javier Gomez came second to move top of the rankings, while France's Vincent Luis was third.

Alistair Brownlee said: "I knew I wasn't that fit and I didn't have good legs in that first lap. The whole thing was tough, but I'm so glad to have the win.

"I probably wouldn't have won today if Jonny was there, so at least I've got one back. I should only get fitter from here."

Jonathan Brownlee had led the standings after three races having won in Auckland and the Gold Coast.

With points already on the board, he opted to concentrate on his preparation for the Rio 2016 test event in August rather than fly to South Africa.

Alistair Brownlee was in ninth place after the weather-affected one-lap swim, and replaced Gomez as leader after the bike leg.

As the run developed he was part of the leading pack but collided with reigning champion Gomez and slipped down to fifth.

However, he powered home in the final two kilometres to make it two golds for Britain in Cape Town, after Vicky Holland's win in the women's race on Saturday.

Brownlee was unimpressed by Gomez's manoeuvring that led to the trip.

"It's bad form in terms of running, or on the bike, you could really injure someone doing that," said the older of the Brownlees.

"He cut across me, maybe not on purpose. In the heat of the moment everyone is going hard and it's tough, but you've got to be careful."
