Triathlon: Non Stanford hopeful over Helen Jenkins injury

Non Stanford is sure fellow Welsh triathlete Helen Jenkins's latest injury will be managed to ensure she will be fit for the 2016 Olympics.

Jenkins will miss the European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan, with an ankle injury.

The 31-year-old has been hampered by injuries and Stanford says getting fit for Rio 2016 will be her target.

"I have every confidence they're doing the right thing and doing their best to make sure Helen will be on that start line in Rio," she said.

"It would be a massive shame for her to miss out."

Great Britain team selection for next summer's Olympic Games is set for August and September this year.

Jenkins, a two-time ITU World Triathlon Series winner, missed much of 2013 and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a foot injury.

She made her return last month in the World Series race in Cape Town, where she finished seventh but will miss the inaugural European Games because of the ankle injury.

"I knew she had a bit of a niggle after Cape Town but didn't think it was quite as serious as having to pull out of the European Games," 2013 world champion Stanford added.

"It's a massive shame."

Stanford herself has been affected by injuries and did not defend the ITU World Championships title she won in 2013 because of a foot injury.

The 26-year-old was forced to pull out of the 2014 Commonwealth Games but made her comeback in Japan in May, finishing seventh.
