Monbeg Dude co-owner Nicky Robinson was delighted after the 10-year-old bay gelding claimed third place in the 2015 Grand National.

The horse showed his liking for Aintree last year with seventh place and jockey Liam Treadwell rode a canny race to guide the 40-1 shot into the places.

Many Clouds, ridden by Leighton Aspell, was first, with Saint Are second.

"Wow, that was amazing... we knew he could stay on and he did... the way he jumped was brilliant," Robinson said.

"He jumped over loose horses and there was a bit of luck we didn't get brought down, but Liam gave him such a good ride, what a bloke."

Monbeg Dude won the Welsh National in January 2013 for owners including rugby union players Robinson - the fly-half capped 13 times by Wales - Mike Tindall and James Simpson-Daniel.

Last year's seventh in the National raised hopes that the horse could do better this year and so it proved for his delighted owners.

"Last year was unbelievable but we knew last year that he probably wasn't going to get anywhere in the placings," Robinson said.

"But this year to travel the way he did, and Liam said he just switched him off for a good lap and a half, and when he realised he was actually in a race you saw he just picked up."

Aspell claimed his second consecutive victory in the National after being aboard Pineau De Re in 2014, and Robinson admitted that his horse was well beaten by this year's Aintree victor Many Clouds.

"He was so far back and just to be in the mix coming over the last [was great]... at no point did he really get to Many Clouds... he was travelling so well it was always hard to get anywhere near that," Robinson added.

"He [Monbeg Dude] gave everything again, you can't ask any more... it is just an amazing buzz."

Of the other Welsh interest in the National, Mon Parrain finished a creditable 11th, the well-backed Rocky Creek faded to come in 18th, while Al Co unseated jockey Denis O'Regan at the first fence and Bob Ford pulled up at the 29th.
