Ian Woosnam should be in Golf Hall of Fame, says Sam Torrance

Welsh golfer Ian Woosnam should have been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame years ago, according to former Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance.

Woosnam, 57, was overlooked for the 'Class of 2015' inductees, despite being a former world number one and winning the Masters in 1991.

Torrance, who led Europe to Ryder Cup victory in 2002, believes Woosnam's omission is an oversight.

"He should've been in the Hall of Fame at least ten years ago," he said.

Woosnam has won 52 professional titles, more than 2015 inductees Mark O'Meara and David Graham, who have 34 and 38 victories respectively.

O'Meara and Graham were joined by Laura Davies and course architect AW Tillinghast.

The Masters is Woosnam's only major title, yet Colin Montgomerie, who has no majors but eight European Tour Orders of Merit, is already in the Hall of Fame.

The Welshman is also a winning Ryder Cup captain after his European team won by a record-equalling 18½ to 9½ points in 2006.

Woosnam has said he is "frustrated" not to have been inducted, and Torrance shares his view.

"A former number one in the world, a Masters champion, a major winner... He's never been put in," added Torrance.

"I don't know why but now he's won there [the Masters], he's got his exemption and he can show them what they're missing."
