Ian Woosnam misses out on Wales Seniors Open title

Ian Woosnam missed another opportunity to win on home soil as Paul Wesselingh triumphed in the Wales Seniors Open at Celtic Manor Resort.

The 57-year-old Welshman shot a one-under-par 69 on the final day's play in Newport.

But that saw him finish two strokes behind England's Wesselingh, who got round the course in 67.

Australia's Peter Fowler hit seven birdies in his round of 66 to finish level with Woosnam.

Woosnam had cause to rue some unforced errors and club selection.

Playing alongside Wesselingh in the final grouping, the turning point came at the 11th hole when the 1991 Masters Champion under-hit a nine iron and saw his ball spin back off the green.

A mishit chip back led to a bogie for Woosnam and opened the door for Wesselingh, who then went on to birdie the 12th.

The two-shot swing was always going to be tough to get back, with tricky wind conditions making play awkward on the Roman Road course - a track which saw only four golfers registering a minus score for the event.

As Woosnam looked to pick up shots Wesselingh was imperious, picking up another birdie on 16 with a glorious approach over the water.

There was to be no way back for Woosnam, who was also pipped to the Wales Open at the Celtic Manor by Steen Tinning back in 2000

It was also a tournament to forget for his fellow Welsh golfers - Mark Mouland finishing five over, Peter Evans 14 over, while Celtic Manor-attached Glyn Davies could not use home knowledge - scoring 16 over par.
