Jazz Carlin missed out on a medal in the 400 metres freestyle final at the World Swimming Championships in Russia.

The Welsh swimmer was fourth - four tenths of a second behind bronze medallist Jessica Ashwood of Australia.

The race was won by world record holder Katie Ledecky in a championship record of 3min, 59.13sec.

"I did my best and to be fourth is really disappointing, especially after coming fourth two years ago," said Carlin.

"I'll just have to try to use it to fuel the rest of the week."

Carlin will race again in the 1500m and 800m where she is targeting a British record.
