Geraint Thomas believes he can finish in the 2016 Tour de France top five for Team Sky.

The Welshman played a significant supporting role for team-mate and 2015 Tour winner Chris Froome.

The track cycling world champion and Olympic gold medalist is currently lying 61st at the Vuelta a Espana with Froome forced out by injury.

"If there's a time trial next year then certainly that'll improve my chances," Thomas told Sport Wales.

"I could go there hoping for a top five. That would be a realistic target. I think the whole focus of the year will be towards the tour and the Rio Olympics afterwards."

Thomas also counts the 2014 Commonwealth road race gold among his achievements.

Team Sky are top of the overall team classification in the Vuelta. Spaniard Joaquim Rodriguez leads the race after 16 stages.
