Sochi 2014: Summerhayes seventh in ski slopestyle final

Britain's Katie Summerhayes finished seventh in the women's Winter Olympic ski slopestyle final as Canada's Dara Howell took gold in Sochi.

The 18-year-old was third in qualifying but the Sheffield teenager fell on her first run in the final before scoring 70.60 in her second.

Howell scored 94.20, with American Devin Logan second (85.40), just ahead of Canada's Kim Lamarre (85.00).

"I'm gutted and there's been tears," said Summerhayes.

"It happens, that's our sport and people fall, but I'm just gutted.

"I'm still happy with how I skied, so I need to take some positives."

The third Canadian finalist, Yuki Tsubota, took a heavy fall on the Rosa Khutor course and was carried off the mountain on a stretcher.

Canadian Freestyle Ski Association president Peter Judge said the 20-year-old had suffered a jaw injury.

"They've taken her in for further assessment," he said. "There's nothing other than that. She didn't have a concussion or anything.

"She's in a good frame of mind. She just came forward and hit her jaw on her knee. It's pretty common, that kind of thing."

Despite admitting to nerves before the qualification session, Summerhayes delivered a controlled and mature performance as two serious medal contenders bowed out.

Canadian world champion Kaya Turski and World Cup leader Lisa Zimmermann of Germany both fell to exit the competition, making its Olympic bow in Sochi.

After finishing with the third highest score, Summerhayes insisted that she would not play it safe in the final and would try a more difficult routine.

"The first run was really slushy and I'm not really sure what happened, I landed a bit back-seat and the next thing I was on the floor," she said.

"The second run... I did what I wanted but I put my hands down twice on landing and that's the difference between winning and losing.

"It's my fault, it's just one of those things. I was conscious of the conditions, but it wasn't really a problem."

James Woods, who suffered an injury after a crash in training last week, will compete in the men's ski slopestyle competition on Thursday.
