Sochi 2014: Great Britain's women lose to Switzerland

Great Britain's women curlers lost to Switzerland on Saturday to leave their semi-final hopes in the balance.

Eve Muirhead's team edged South Korea 10-8 in the early session but then went down 8-6 to the Swiss.

Britain have won four and lost three in the round-robin stage, with Russia and Denmark still to play and at least one win required for a semi-final place.

The British men remain in a strong position to qualify despite losing 7-5 to Canada in the 10th and final end.

Victory would have taken David Murdoch's team through but a second defeat in five games leaves them joint third with five points and two games left.

The top four in both the men's and the women's groups progress to the semi-final.

Britain's women came back from 8-7 down going into the final end against South Korea as Muirhead kept her composure to earn three and the victory.

That set up the chance to all but guarantee a semi-final place against the Swiss, who had lost their last three matches.

But Switzerland took control when they scored three in the sixth end to moved 6-2 clear and, despite cutting the deficit to just one on the penultimate end, Britain could not get back on level terms.

"I struggled on the first few ends," Muirhead told BBC Sport. "We are not down and out - we have two games to go.

"We need to stay relaxed and come out and enjoy it against Russia and Denmark."

Team-mate Anna Sloan added: "It was a difficult night. We tried to dig in, but we were not at the races.

"We will have to pick ourselves up for Monday. It is in our hands, and hopefully our performances will build up a bit."
