Elise Christie wins 1,000m short-track speed skating World Cup

Elise Christie has become Great Britain's first short-track speed skating World Cup champion at 1,000m.

She claimed a silver medal in the 1,000m in Sochi, Russia, to guarantee her number-one ranking overall.

With only one World Cup race remaining, in Germany, Christie cannot be caught in the standings.

Meanwhile, GB men's four-man bobsleigh finished fifth at the bobsleigh and skeleton World Championships in St Moritz, Switzerland.

A false start in Christie's 1,000m event seemed to unsettle the Scot and when the gun went for a second time she fell behind the pack of five competitors, before battling back to second place.

Christie has now won seven medals this season, having taken her sixth on Saturday with bronze in the 1,500m short-track event.

Korea's Shim Suk Hee maintained her overall World Cup 1,500m lead by taking gold at the 2014 Winter Olympic venue, ahead of China's Li Jianrou in silver.

Christie achieved her World Cup standing for the 1,000m with five podium finishes and one victory, in Japan in December.

The short-track speed skating World Championships will take place in Debrecen, Hungary, from 8-10 March.

The four-man bob crew of John Jackson, Stuart Benson, Bruce Tasker and Joel Fearon were just 0.66 seconds behind gold medallists Germany following their four runs, and only 0.07 seconds off a medal. Russia claimed silver and the United States bronze.

The last time GB won a men's world bobsleigh medal was in 1966.

In the skeleton at St Moritz on Saturday, GB's Dom Parsons and Kristan Bromley were ninth and 10th.
