Sheffield Wednesday are now winless in six league games against Swansea City since a 3-1 win in February 2019.

Sheffield Wednesday missed the chance to move out of the Championship drop zone after Jamal Lowe's goal earned a point for Swansea City in a 1-1 draw.

Substitute Lowe fired home from close-range on 76 minutes moments after the hosts had rattled the woodwork.

Bailey Cadamarteri's fifth goal of the season on 41 minutes had given the Owls a 1-0 advantage at the interval.

The draw means Wednesday remain in the bottom three, with Swansea now eight points clear of the relegation zone.

A point apiece was probably the least Swansea deserved in a game where they enjoyed over 70% possession, but the failure to win after going ahead will frustrate the hosts who were so close to going 2-0 up moments before Swansea equalised.

After a dream start to life at the Owls with four wins on the spin, boss Danny Rohl had a fortnight to stew over a 6-0 defeat to promotion chasing Ipswich Town.

Rohl's response was to alter his line-up with changes all over the pitch as as Pol Valentin, Akin Famewo, Liam Palmer and Bailey Cadamarteri all came into the starting XI.

Swansea boss Luke Williams had a more enjoyable international break after the Swans' south Wales derby success and Williams made two changes to the side who beat Cardiff City 2-0, with Josh Key making his first start since December and Jay Fulton also earning a recall.

The Swans have been improving on the road in recent weeks and they just about shaded the opening stages of the game, but Przemysław Płacheta could not find the target with their best opportunity.

With the stakes so high for the hosts there was a tension among the home fans, but a strong finish to the first-half saw the Owls take an advantage into the interval.

Former Cardiff City midfielder Will Vaulks missed a chance to put them ahead on 37 minutes, but four minutes later Wednesday did go in front as Cadamarteri - the son of former Everton forward Danny - got on the end of Bambo Diaby's flick-on from Vaulks' freekick and he applied the close-range finish.

Swansea pressed for an equaliser after the break but Jamie Paterson was twice denied as he saw a shot saved expertly by James Beadle, before a subsequent effort deflected onto the post, while Matt Grimes fired wide.

The visitors left gaps as they pushed for an equaliser and Sheffield Wednesday almost doubled their advantage when Djeidi Gassama was found in space in the penalty area, but Carl Rushworth produced an excellent save to deny him.

The game swung dramatically in the space of 60 seconds as Ike Ugbo controlled brilliantly to set-up a shooting chance, but his right-footed effort rattled the Swansea crossbar. Within a minute, Swansea had equalised.

After all their possession it was ultimately a set-piece that saw the Swans level as Lowe intercepted Harry Darling's header and controlled well before firing into an empty net as the hosts appealed in vain for an offside flag to save them.

Marvin Johnson did have a late chance to win it for Wednesday who kept pushing for a winner, but Rushworth denied him.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"Every point is important. In the second half we made a lot of chances, but this is football and to win, you have to be clinical.

"There is one moment that goes against us, a set-piece where we were not man marking this is one point, we always had a lot of opportunities.

"But we showed a reaction after two defeats and we got the basics right. If we do that in the last seven games we will give ourselves a chance.

"Some 50/50 decisions today did not go for us… be we had a lot of chances to decide the game."

Swansea boss Luke Williams told BBC Radio Wales:

"A point is pretty good on the road, but I think the performance is not so good and I'm not so happy with that.

"Taking a point is something positive. In the first half we had really good control but we didn't create enough chances and I don't like that.

"In the second half we made it a game of basketball. We conceded a goal close to the break and we needed to come out and try and go after the opposition with more intensity.

"The way we finished the game was not good. The opposition caused us a lot of trouble in the last 20 minutes."

    This match report is a joke!

    Filled with errors and mistakes. Even the stats are incorrect.

    Having said that, Wednesday showed all the same old failings yet again. Disgraceful static defending, failure to play to our greatest strength, which is moving the ball forward with speed, creating panic in the opposition, and failure to simply hit the target time after time after time.

      ..moving the ball forward at speed to Ugbo and Cadamarteri, not to Smith and Wilkes. The manager does not learn. Lovely guy but not battle hardened. The team needs points not trying the same old changes up front , and putting out a undermanned midfield in front of a defence which needs protecting.

    Well after the Cardiff game, what has happened to us? We were crap and stole a point today. Sheffield Wednesday by far the better team and rightfully felt robbed.

    Just got back t' valleys in da chopper and more than happy with the result. Not many teams come away from the Old Lady wi a point given her fearsome reputation, so we'll tek the robbery all day long. As for our young un, he was full of admiration for Wednesday's revolutionary head tactician. "This pioneering 'Rohl ball' system is a sight to behold when in full flow, Dad. WOW."

    Well not the 3 points you guys were hoping for, but at least the gap is closing. Just remember that it wasn't long ago, during the dark days of Xisco that everybody was writing you off. Everyone was saying things like oh Wednesday look dead and buried, they're a MASSIVE club etc. Well, not anymore. (the dead and buried bit.) Keep going SWFC. We're all with you.👍

    Watching today was sobering.
    The lack of quality in our composure and finishing was embarrassing-and the awful defending that gifted them a free shot from 6 yards is excruciating. There seems to be NO leadership in the back four -they all just stare at each other rather than communicate.

    Enjoyed the game (well, second half, the first half was poor). But what it showed was that, save for Leeds at the top and Rotherham at the bottom, there is very little between the Championship teams. Which is why they struggle if they go up. Special mention to Barry Bannon: he was only on for 20 mins and, in terms of skill and effort, was on another planet compared to everyone else on the pitch.

    DR seems to have a blind spot over the inept Diaby, and his insistence on using all subs every match is questionable. Bannan for Palmer and Smith for Igbo were unnecessary and cost us momentum. It's pointless having Smith on the pitch when you are incapable of getting quality crosses in the box. Gassama and Musaba should be on the pitch 90 mins every match. We are threadbare in quality.

    That first half was a hard watch for the owls fans but they did improve during the second period but a lack of goals is going to condemn the to relegation

      How many goals did Wednesday score in March? Which book of statistics persuades DR to rely on Smith and Wilks after taking off the only two blokes who can actually score? He is naive about the stats it seems to me. And as for the midfield, well I ask you. Vaulks and Palmer. Not fair to either of them.

    Too many golden opportunities to score squandered today. Vaulks, Ugbo, Johnson to mention just 3 who should have all scored. The story of our season is missed chances, an inability to finish teams off, an inability to convert our chances at the right time. Smith and Wilks are poor and add nothing, so why bring them on?
    Swansea had 70% possession but its goals that count and we failed to get them

    Could have done with 3 points today and with better finishing ……….but we take the one and move on.

    Closed the points gap on Huddersfield, Plymouth and Birmingham, but could have done with the (toothless)tigers doing a number on Stoke though.

      Don’t much rate Fulton and Grimes together; team always seems slower and more sideways!

      Fulton just doesn’t move in the sense of creating space for teammates or giving an option for a pass. And I think he drags Grimes’ performance down.
