Ellis Simms scores for Coventry City at Huddersfield Town
Ellis Simms has scored 10 goals in his last six games for Coventry in league and cup

Ellis Simms' first-half double helped Coventry beat Huddersfield to stay firmly in the hunt for the Championship play-offs.

He opened the scoring with a wonderful right-foot strike before the same boot doubled the lead just six minutes later.

Rhys Healey pulled a goal back for Huddersfield with 11 minutes remaining but Haji Wright made the points safe for the visitors in stoppage time.

Victory took the Sky Blues up to seventh but still four points outside the play-offs, while Huddersfield stay a point from safety in 22nd.

Since the turn of the year, Simms is the most prolific goalscorer in the top four divisions with 13 goals in 18 games in all competitions and his quick double put Coventry in control in a dominant first half.

First, he picked up the ball on the left edge of the penalty area, cut away from the dead-ball line on to his right boot and sent a searing strike into the top right corner.

And shortly after, a neat move saw Kasey Palmer drive from midfield and slide Milan van Ewijk into the right side of the area before his cut-back was turned home by a sliding Simms.

It then took a smart save from Terriers goalkeeper Lee Nicholls to deny him an eight-minute hat-trick.

Huddersfield threatened to get back into the game as David Kasumu clipped the outside of the left post before half-time and Jack Rudoni crashed a shot against the bar after the break.

They did pull a goal back as Coventry were caught trying to play out of their own area and Healey finished with his right boot as City threatened to let the game slip.

Pat Jones twice stung the hands of Sky Blues goalkeeper Brad Collins but Wright ensured there was no late drama.

He received a pass on the top of the area, shifted on to his left boot to create a yard of space and lashed a low strike past Nicholls.

Huddersfield boss Andre Breitenreiter told BBC Radio Leeds:

"We had a good start and the first big chance from Josh Koroma on a one-on-one situation and we should've taken the lead then.

"When you are the bottom of the table you need to play with confidence and we lost too many individual duels in the first half - we spoke about this at half-time because you cannot win when you lose too many duels.

"Set-pieces were poor today but we created the chances to score. You need a bit of luck to get a draw and we tried everything to get the draw but they got a third - but that's football."

Coventry City manager Mark Robins told BBC CWR:

"I thought we had a really good first half, we got ahead and then had some other chances to score.

"We gave them a leg up into the game, which we spoke about at half-time with players coming back after the international break.

"It wasn't a scintillating performances but this stage of the season you find a way to win games and we did that."

    Mark Robins must be one of the greatest player developers of all time and the last few years are proof of that. The job he’s done this year in bringing on Simms and Wright, follows a long list including O’Hare, who didn’t get a look in at Villa and Gyokeres who was likewise going nowhere with Brighton. All destined for greatness because of MR’s belief in them!

      I'm a 3G Cov supporter who watched his first game in 1970-71. Taking nothing away from JHill & Curtis/Sillett but if MR/AV manage to get us into the EPL they will deserve a statue and road renaming.
      A big city & county with 1 club. Always under-performing except under Hill or Storer.

    Shame Plymouth didn’t hold on against Norwich- we are chasing hard but will it be enough?Simms had gig boots to fill but by god is he filling them. If Simms and Wriggt continue like this it could be the most prolific Sky Blue attack Cov has ever seen👍

    Our strikers finding form at the right time.

    Big vic scored 13 I think in his first season for us. Not comparing style of play but Simms and Wright coming good. Yes I hold my hand up. I was getting worried earlier in the season and thankfull that goals were coming from all over the pitch.

    Got to stop the headless chicken when we ship one. Bit nervy until Wright wrapped it up Pusb

      I was hopeful then disillusioned by Haji. He seems to be able to fall over the ball.
      But wow when he scores, he sure does score. Who cares if he is useless for 80mins, if he gets a goal or 2 in the other 10mins.
      Robins is an amazing judge.

    We were the best team in the second half and had AB made the changes earlier we might have got something from the game. But well done to Coventry and the loudest fans again this season but i dont think they are good enough to make the playoffs or the cup final but good luck.

    With only 8 wins all season we deserve to be in the bottom three but with April's fixtures we could escape.With this manager and players it;s a slim chance. I think our luck has run out.

      There is alot of fringe players in the prem who are brilliant, but they need confidence and in the prem they have 3 bad games and they get dropped, we gave Simms half a season and he came right. Vic was the same. They need game time, thats all.

    Sky Blues keeping up the play-off pressure, but it will need a blip from West Brom or Norwich to let us in. And of course we have 3 or 4 other teams pushing us from below. It should be an exciting run-in.

    Great win but we gave balls away we shouldn't and became too complacent which resulted in the mistake by collins. We hung on at the end and thank god Haji still has his scoring boots on. Playoffs are still on, bring on monday.

    Why is it every time hogg plays from start we lose but when he is a sub we win time to revamp the squad....... been a terrier 45+ years ive seen the good and the bad but this is just another level of we dont care win or lose we still get a paypacket.....time to start playing for the pride of the shirt and not how big ya wallet is gonabe

    Huddersfield are not relegated as yet. Let us not run ahead of ourselves but they need to find form from somewhere in the same way Port Vale have found form. And pretty fast.

    Robbins has done a remarkable job with Simms and Wright, considering how they were misfiring earlier in the season. What is good to see are the many chances that the midfield are producing. Even with O'Hare only playing a third of a game, they still look potent. Just hope Robbins stays next season if we don't go up.

    We were cruising to a comfortable win, so a silly error puts pressure on us, but have to be pleased with the overall team performance, and well pleased again for Ellis Simms PUSB

      We did give the ball away too much and did some ropey passing, great result but we would have got punished severely by a better team. Have to tighten up and stay switched on if we are going to reach the playoffs.

    The confidence of a striker, can be such a fleeting thing. Having a coach, who has played the position, at a high level, is a huge advantage. Mark Robins is calm, patient and tactically adaptable. Simms and Wright have been the beneficiaries, joining a team with great chemistry and culture. The season will go down to the wire- and this team will fight, to the end. PUSB.
