The Daily Express also lead on Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali potentially facing another ban. However, they also find space on the back page for a story about Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly.

The American will be "ousted as Chelsea chairman by his fellow owners at the first opportunity after widespread criticism of the American" the paper reports. The 50-year-old has "attended many games at Stamford Bridge and taken a more hands-on role than many of his fellow investors" which is "in spite of Boehly having a smaller stake in the Blues".

All of this is pure conjecture. Bayern Munich's honorary president says something and because of his profile a conversation ensues. That said, I'd love Xabi Alonso at Liverpool but I could see why he'd stay at Bayer Leverkusen. He's at the start of his career, yet he'll be able to express himself at the highest level without the added pressure/expectation of a Liverpool/Bayern/Real. It'd be a smart decision if he stayed.

The Daily Star have inevitably gone for a pun with their headline of 'Bandro Tonali' but there's also space on their back page for an England story about Euro 2024.

According to the paper Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate "could be given leeway to take 26 England players" to the tournament after "Uefa vowed to listen to international bosses" even though in the past Southgate has "preferred tighter 23-man squads".

Very disappointed by Xabi Alonso (when he confirms it) but I respect it. In an ideal world he would stay at Bayer Leverkusen refining his craft for another year then come to Liverpool. But I think that’s it from him. Real Madrid will definitely be picking him up after Leverkusen. But with the sporting director staff mostly sorted there will always be a plan B and so on. Trust the club.

The Daily Mirror hones in on Sandro Tonali being been charged with misconduct by the Football Association for alleged breaches of betting rules. Tonali "could face another ban for allegedly placing 50 bets on football matches after joining Newcastle" the paper reports but the club "hope any potential sanctions will not be added to the 10-month suspension he is currently serving".

The Daily Telegraph's sport section also leads on the news Xabi Alonso will turn down the chance to take over at Anfield despite the Bayer Leverkusen boss having seemed to be "the anointed one" after "extravagant praise" from outgoing Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

"Liverpool are sure there are others capable of moving the squad forward in the full-throttle style which has become the norm under Klopp," writes the paper's Merseyside patch reporter Chris Bascombe in his piece. "They will have their own ideas on a successor, while the club’s data analysts, led by Will Spearman, have already been compiling dossiers on those most suitable for the post. "

I believe at Liverpool we should go back to the old Boot room and appoint Pep Lijnders as the new manager. He knows the club, the staff, the players and the academy. He wants to be a manager anyway and it worked out well for Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan and Kenny Dalglish to name a few.

The Daily Mail put a picture of two-time European Cup-winning former Nottingham Forest defender Larry Lloyd as the main image on their back page following news of his death yesterday, but their lead story is Xabi Alonso's decision to snub the chance to replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager.

The paper reports the Reds were "dealt a serious blow" in their search for a new manager with the "bombshell" news of Alonso's decision which leaves "Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim as the leading candidate, alongside and Brighton's Roberto Roberto De Zerbi" to take over from Klopp.
