Traffic concern over houses plan in Oxfordshire

Residents have warned that access into the Barton area of Oxford must be improved if plans to build 1,000 new homes on the estate get the go-ahead.

Oxford City Council wants to develop a green field site off Barton Village Road, which is currently a nature reserve and recreation space.

Sue Holden, of Barton Community Association, said there was concern among local people about traffic.

"They'd need to resolve the transport before any building," she added.

New primary school

The previous government set a target of 55,000 new homes to be built in Oxfordshire by 2026, and Mrs Holden said Barton may have to take its share.

"We have to think logically and positively. We are hoping they will come up with an acceptable scheme," she added.

Colin Cook, of Oxford City Council, reassured residents who are concerned that allotments would be lost to the development.

"It's certainly our policy to retain and maintain the allotments. I don't want to preclude some minor changes to the allotments but this is what the area action plan is about," he added.

As well as houses, the council is planning a new primary school and areas of open space.

The council is preparing a public exhibition as part of an initial six-week public consultation, which is due to begin on 11 June.

A second consultation is planned later in the year.
