A Premier League star who got someone else to take part of his driving test has been cautioned by police.

Wigan Athletic's Charles N'Zogbia was arrested as he turned up at test centre in Sale, Greater Manchester, to take his practical test on 21 April.

The 23-year-old winger was questioned on suspicion of fraud by false representation.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) opted to issue a caution when he answered bail on Thursday.

The French player was held after driving authorities contacted the force about his theory test.

Speaking at the time, Wigan's manager Roberto Martinez said his star player had made a "naive mistake".

"A 23-year-old man has been given a caution," a GMP spokeswoman said on Friday.

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has previously said that tens of thousands of people could have paid fraudsters to sit their driving test.

It has described the issue as a serious problem and in December welcomed jail sentences given to two Manchester men who took people's driving tests for cash.

Ali Abdullah, 32, and Muktar Nuren, 22, admitted conspiracy to defraud and were jailed for three years and one year respectively.

The pair illegally sat theory and practical driving tests for up to 43 candidates across Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and further afield.
