Liverpool marks Armed Forces Day

People in Liverpool have been paying tribute to the military during Armed Forces Day.

A thanksgiving service was held at Liverpool Cathedral and Pier Head was the focus of celebrations.

A marquee, flanked by World War II vehicles, hosted stalls run by armed forces welfare societies and merchant navy organisations.

Crowds, which included veterans and cadets, gathered outside to hear the band of the Parachute Regiment.

'Bravely sacrificed'

A spokesman for the The Liverpool Seafarers' Centre, which helped organise the event, said: "It's been an opportunity for the people of Merseyside to meet and show support for our veterans and for families and forces of the future.

"It is our opportunity to recognise those who work tirelessly around the world on our behalf.

"We wanted to highlight the important relationship between the armed forces, including the merchant navy, whose seafarers were bravely sacrificed in assisting armed forces in many military operations."

The marquee will be open again on Sunday between 1100 and 1700 BST.
