Man charged with rape over attack near shops

A man has been charged with rape after a woman was attacked in Birmingham at the weekend.

West Midlands Police said Cornel Filipeche, 21, had also been charged with robbery and causing grievous bodily harm.

It follows an incident near the One Stop shopping centre on Walsall Road, Perry Barr, shortly before 02:00 GMT on Saturday.

Filipeche, of no fixed address, did not enter a plea when he appeared at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

He was remanded into custody and is due to next appear at Birmingham Crown Court on 20 February.

A 22-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of rape, has been released while the force continues its investigation.
