A teenage girl has been arrested on suspicion of assault after a school was put into lockdown.

Sussex Police said it responded to an altercation at Heathfield Community College in East Sussex shortly before 09:00 BST on Friday and a 17-year-old was arrested.

The secondary school said it was put into lockdown due to suspected intruders, but had since reopened for students to return to class at 10:30.

"Intruders that were on site have been apprehended and are now off site. We are grateful to a swift and effective police presence when needed," it said.

The school added that the lockdown procedures worked "extremely well" and all staff and students were safe.

The teenager remains in custody, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Sussex Police.
