Beach steps left 'hanging' by shifting sands

Visitors have been warned to use alterative access points at Cleethorpes beach

Beachgoers have been urged to stay "well away" from a set of access steps at Cleethorpes beach after shifting sands left the structure hanging in mid-air.

North East Lincolnshire Council said the issue had been caused by recent adverse weather conditions.

"Generally, sand levels across Cleethorpes beach are stable," a spokesperson said.

"However, due to wind-driven waves, and recent high tides, these levels have lowered considerably in some places."

The council urged people to avoid the steps while it worked to "resolve the issue".

It said several other access points were located nearby.

People also took to social media to share their thoughts.

One person suggested the structure had probably been designed by someone who had never visited the resort, while another quipped the steps had shrunk in the cold weather.

It is not the first time the weather has led to a warning to beachgoers in the resort.

In April, people were warned to stay away from the wreckage of a World War Two aircraft containing live ammunition after it was exposed by strong currents and wind.
