Disruption warning over city's summer roadworks
- Published
Motorists in Leeds have been urged to plan ahead, with "significant disruptive work" due to get under way on several major routes in the city during the summer.
The work was expected to take place around the Armley Gyratory (A58), on the Stanningley Bypass (A647) and on the Outer Ring Road (A6120) between Horsforth and Rodley, according to Leeds City Council.
The three sets of work had been planned to coincide with "reduced levels of traffic over the school summer holidays", the authority said.
Jonathan Pryor, the council's deputy leader, said road users should "allow more time for journeys, be patient and follow the signed road diversions in place".
Mr Pryor, who is also executive member for economy, transport and sustainable development, said teams were "working hard to minimise disruption by planning, co-ordinating and sequencing large highways schemes across Leeds".
Leeds City Council said the work would include:
Armley Gyratory Wellington Road (A58) footbridge final phase:
Work will run from Monday 8 July to Sunday 21 July, with night-time inbound and outbound lane closures from 20:00 BST until 06:00 BST
From Monday 22 July, permanent inbound and outbound lane closures are expected to last up to six months
Wellington Road footbridge demolition is due to start at about 20:00 BST on Saturday 27 July.
Stanningley Bypass (A647) Outer Ring Road between Farnley and Bramley
Crossover construction to enable contraflow starts Monday 8 July, 20:00 BST to 06:00 BST
Joints and surfacing works start eastbound on Friday 20 July and then westbound on Thursday 8 August until 30 August
Ongoing 30mph speed limit
Connecting West Leeds project (A6120) Horsforth to Rodley
Advanced works with night-time lane closures to start on 23 June for three weeks
Highway widening to A6120 west of Horsforth roundabout, along with new cycleway and footway construction, due to start on Wednesday 24 July, until scheme completion in summer 2025
Full lane closures will be in place for the initial 11 weeks, then partially removed as works progresses
A council spokesperson said a temporary span had been installed on the Wellington Road footbridge in 2001, after it was hit by a vehicle.
It would be demolished and replaced with a new structure spanning the A58, with "improvements to both approach ramps to better meet the needs of non-motorised users and people with disabilities", the council said.
Mr Pryor said the separate schemes necessitated "careful planning" with other works, "not always in our control and events across our busy city".
Mr Pryor urged road users to "plan ahead" when travelling through the Armley Gyratory (A58), Stanningley Bypass (A647) between Farnley and Bramley, and through works on the A6120 near Horsforth.
Councillor Pryor added: "We thank everyone for their ongoing patience and thank those who have already changed the way they travel into and around the city."
