A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire destroyed two homes last week.

Cambridgeshire Police was notified by the fire service of the blaze on Houghton Road, St Ives, on Friday.

The 47-year-old, from St Ives, was also arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit fraud and possession of an offensive weapon.

He has since been bailed by police to appear at Parkside Police Station in Cambridge on 6 January.

The two newly built properties were severely damaged.

Det Insp Nicola Lamport said the two properties were "destroyed" and the cost could be "hundreds of thousands of pounds".

“We are treating the fire as arson so I am keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and noticed anything at all suspicious," she said.
