Drivers in Guildford are facing weeks of disruption because of roadworks.

Locals say five-way traffic lights on The Chase and Benbrick Road, close to Guildford Catherdral, have left drivers waiting more than half an hour, with queues backing on to the A3.

The work began on 13 November and is due to take a month to complete.

Surrey County Council said it will improve safety for vulnerable pedestrians and children.

One driver said she was warning her colleagues after another co-worker was an hour late for work.

"I've just taken some photographs and told them to brace themselves," she told BBC Radio Surrey.

But a local resident said the long term gains would be worth the temporary inconvenience.

She said: "It is a very busy junction so if you want to encourage children to be independent and walk to school on their own, a traffic light or a pedestrian crossing is absolutely a must.

"Traffic around the primary schools is horrific."

In a statement, Surrey County Council said: “These works will see a variety of highway improvements implemented on The Chase and Benbrick Road, including a new zebra crossing that will particularly benefit people with pushchairs and mobility scooters, and pupils of the nearby school.

"Other improvements include lining works, island adjustments and the removal of a slip road on The Chase to be replaced by a pavement.

“Temporary signals are being monitored and manually controlled, and we will do our utmost to minimise disruption as best we can whilst we carry out these essential works. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
