Sheffield already has seven McDonald's restaurants

A McDonald's drive-through restaurant could be built near one of Sheffield's busiest roads under new plans.

The fast food giant has applied to Sheffield Council to open a franchise on land adjacent to London Road and Broadfield Road in the Lowfield area.

The local authority has received 34 objections to the plans, citing the proximity to other McDonald's restaurants, traffic concerns and the impact on children's health.

A McDonald's spokesperson said the restaurant would "bring significant investment" to the area and create 120 jobs.

According to the planning application, a further 190 jobs would be created during the construction phase.

The land where the restaurant is proposed - a brownfield site - is currently empty.

'Good neighbour'

The plans include 25 parking spaces, which McDonald's said was "a suitable level of provision to meet demand and prevent overflow".

The company claimed the level of new traffic created by the development would be "modest and unlikely to have a material impact".

Last year, the council completed a programme of roadworks at the junction between London Road and Broadfield Road to ease traffic congestion.

According to McDonald's, more than 90% of the 641 responses it received to a consultation about the proposals were objections.

In response to concerns about healthy eating, the company said it had a "diverse menu" which offered "healthier alternatives", including main meals under 600 calories.

It added that the economic benefits of the restaurant would be "considerable".

A spokesperson said: "At McDonald's, we strive to be a good neighbour in the communities in which we operate, and we look forward to continuing to work with the local community and stakeholders to address any concerns they may have."

Councillors are expected to decide on the plans in the coming months.
