A police officer has been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving after a man was critically injured during a chase.

PC Sam Lockley, 34, was driving a marked police vehicle when he attempted to stop a suspected drunk driver on Drake Street in Rochdale at about 03:30 GMT on 19 November 2023, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said.

This led to a "short pursuit lasting approximately a minute" when the Greater Manchester Police vehicle hit a 38-year-old man on the footpath of Rochdale Road, the IOPC said.

The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and has received extensive medical treatment since.

The IOPC said: "At the end of our investigation we referred our report to the Crown Prosecution Service in April 2025, who subsequently decided to bring the charge last month."

PC Lockley is due before Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.
