A 17-year-old boy who stabbed a man in the shoulder after an argument and left him to die has been jailed for murder.

Jordan Rance attacked 49-year-old Paul Marsh at a flat in Atherton, Wigan, last year after a minor disagreement broke out between the two and then escalated.

The teenager has been named despite his age after a judge lifted reporting restrictions.

He was found guilty by a jury and jailed for a minimum of 21 years at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court.

A group of people were at the home on Samuel Street in Atherton on 17 November 2023 when the argument began.

The row escalated when Rance, who was 16 at the time, lunged at the Mr Marsh, stabbing him in the shoulder, Greater Manchester Police said

The teenager ran away while others called for an ambulance, which arrived to find Mr Marsh unconscious, before he later died.

Det Ch Insp Neil Higginson said a "seemingly innocuous exchange" had escalated into a "tragic" loss of life.

"No good can come from carrying a knife and self-protection is not a reasonable excuse.”
