Camera plan to stop parents breaking travel rules

A council is proposing to install traffic cameras close to a city school to stop parents ignoring travel rules.
Leicester City Council introduced restrictions in Knighton in February 2022 to prohibit drivers accessing Northfold Road and Eastcourt Road during school-run times.
It was an effort by the authority to improve road safety, congestion and air quality near Overdale Infant and Junior Schools, which sit on the same site.
However, the authority said there had been an "increase in the number of parents driving into the zone".
The council said it had applied to the government for the necessary powers to install cameras in the area and said it was seeking the public's views on the plan.
Under the current restrictions, drivers - unless permit holders - should not access Northfold Road and Eastcourt Road between 08:00 BST and 09:00, and 14:30 and 16:00.
The measures were introduced at the request of residents and the "wider school community", according to the council.
Geoff White, assistant city mayor for environment and transport, said: "Camera enforcement can be a very effective way of deterring motorists from committing traffic offences that are dangerous or obstructive for other road users.
“That’s why we’re considering introducing these measures to help enforce restrictions on two school streets close to Overdale Infant and Junior Schools."
A public consultation will run until 15 September.
Overdale Infant and Junior Schools were contacted for comment.
