A man and woman have died after a crash in County Antrim on Saturday evening, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) have confirmed.

The collision involving a grey Skoda and a grey Cupra happened at about 18:25 GMT on the Lurgan Road in Glenavy.

The man and woman in the Cupra were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Skoda was transferred to hospital for treatment.

The Lurgan Road reopened to traffic on Sunday evening.

A bald man wearing a black coat over a blue and white striped shirt is standing in front of a rural road which is closed off by a blue and white police cordon. The background is out of focus but a hedgerow, tress and white building can be seen.

MLA for South Antrim John Blair said Glenavy will be shocked and saddened by the news of the crash

Alliance MLA for South Antrim John Blair said his thoughts were with the family and friends of those who were involved in the collision.

"There cannot possibly be worse news for any family coming up to the Christmas period," he said.

"I know that Glenavy itself is a settled and close knit community and there will be much shock and sadness across that community also."

In a separate incident on Saturday evening, emergency services were called to a two-vehicle collision near Lisburn.

Five people were taken to hospital - a man, two women and two children - after the incident on Saintfield Road at the junction of Old Ballynahinch Road.

Both women and a child are being treated for serious injuries.
