Housing estate plans for old Daimler factory

Plans to build up to 250 homes on the site of the former Daimler car factory in Coventry have been submitted.

The properties could be built on land at Sandy Lane business park, if Coventry City Council approves the proposals.

Documents show the development would be focused around the Daimler Powerhouse, a former car factory building which is now a creative hub.

It comes almost a year after plans for nearly double the number of properties at the site was withdrawn.

Developers Rainier took over the project in January after the old plans, put forward by the Wigley Group, were shelved.

The previous bid, lodged in 2021, was for 480 homes, a park, up to two public squares and walking and cycle routes to the canal.

A similar area of public spaces is included in the new plans, but the scheme's buildings will be smaller - up to five storeys high rather than 12 - and it no longer includes flexible commercial or community space.

The council will now review the designs before either approving or rejecting them.

Opened as one of the first car factories in the UK, the Daimler factory was first set up in the late 19th Century in a former textile mill.

Most of the site was destroyed in the Blitz.

The site's current buildings, apart from the Powerhouse, will be demolished if the bid gets the go-ahead.
