A scheme offering access to free physical activities for children and young people across Wolverhampton is to be extended, the city council said.

More than 17,500 people up to the age of 18 have signed up to the Yo! Active programme, which enables them to be able to try various sports, including swimming, use of gyms and playing basketball.

The council said it was now looking for an organisation to manage and run the programme in conjunction with the authority from April for a year, but that could be extended to four years.

Councillor Obaida Ahmed, cabinet member for health, wellbeing and community, said Yo! Active had been "a fantastic success story".

It was launched last year by the council and the Wolves Foundation - the official charity of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC - and sees children able to participate in sport at WV Active centres and community venues in the city.

"By extending the programme, initially for one year with a view to extend, we are investing in the health and wellbeing of our city's future generations and ensuring that every young person – whatever their background or ability – has the chance to thrive," Ahmed said.
