Delays warning as 12mph convoy begins journey

Diversions will be in place along the route the convoy is taking

A slow-moving convoy of two large pieces of electrical equipment is travelling across Sussex.

Motorists were warned of possible delays with diversions in place on a stretch of the A27 while the supergrid transformers were on the move.

The convoy started its journey from Shoreham Port in West Sussex and was headed to a substation near Uckfield, East Sussex.

The 24-mile journey, which includes travelling on the A27, A26 and A22, is expected to take between six and eight hours with a top speed of 12mph (19.3kph).

An A27 diversion is in place eastbound from the Devil’s Dyke roundabout and westbound from Lewes Road.

Lane one of the A27's eastbound road from Devil’s Dyke Road to the A23 roundabout will remain open to re-route traffic onto the diversion.

The equipment is being moved to a substation near Uckfield, East Sussex

Several junctions onto the A27 are also shut.

East Sussex Highways urged those using the roads to allow extra time for their journeys.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said: "Motorists are asked not to follow satellite navigation systems but instead to follow the diversion signs in place."
