Town's car-cruising ban renewed for three years

Drivers will be prevented from congregating in large numbers, participating in racing, performing stunts or using vehicles in an anti-social manner

An order banning car cruising from a town has been renewed for three years.

The Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) covers a swathe of West Thurrock, including the Lakeside shopping centre, and will be enforced by Essex Police.

Acting Insp Adam Bowden said: "This persistent behaviour has a detrimental impact on local people."

Thurrock Council said the previous order had been due to expire by the end of December.

The order covers a large swathe of the Essex town bordered by the Thames, the M25, A13, B186 and West Thurrock Way

PSPOs are powers that can be used by councils and their partners to address anti-social behaviour in defined areas.

It gives police powers to prevent drivers from congregating in large numbers, participating in racing, performing stunts or using vehicles in an anti-social manner.

It also stops car parks from being used for this purpose.

Insp Bowden said: "We want people to enjoy their vehicles, but when they speed, race, drive in convoys, perform stunts and make excessive noise we will take action.

"This order complements the work we do and will continue to do to reduce anti-social behaviour and enhance public safety."
