An historic church hall in Guernsey could soon be converted into residential property.

The site, known as "The Barn" next to St Andrew's Church, featured on the Duke of Richmond map of 1787 and has served many purposes over the years.

The hall is now the subject of a planning application to turn it into housing.

Martin Thwaite, senior constable of St Andrew, said: "We're at the stage where we have prepared plans for a potential conversion to a residential unit and these have just been presented and the application is being looked at now."

Speaking to BBC Radio Guernsey, he explained that talks dated back a "few years" after an approach from the church congregation.

He said: "The church congregation approached the constables to say their use of the Barn as a meeting place, kitchen and so on had declined."

Thwaite was unable to give a timescale as to when the work would be complete, admitting: "We wouldn't even know the market value".

He indicated the planning application would need to progress and talks with estate agents would help work out a true timescale.
