Major roadworks will begin on a busy road in Burton-upon-Trent on 4 March, Staffordshire County Council has said.

The £1.25m scheme on the A5121 Derby Road is being carried out as part of a wider £6m investment in the town’s roads over the next two years.

Work will include reconstruction and resurfacing of the road and roundabouts between James Brindley Way and the Pirelli Stadium Roundabout, along with repairs to drainage systems, kerbs, ironwork and footpaths.

The council said the scheme was expected to take approximately 17 weeks to complete.

Temporary traffic lights will be in place for the first seven weeks of the scheme.

Resurfacing phases will follow this, with a combination of temporary road and lane closures as well as some night time works and a signed diversion.

The council said it was co-ordinating the scheme, with work being carried out at the Branston Interchange A38 junction to ensure road closures will not be in place on both routes at the same time.

'Smoother journeys'

Cabinet member for highways and transport David Williams said: “This is another really important scheme for the town.

“Derby Road is one of the main routes into Burton and the impact of high volumes of car and heavy goods vehicles means it is now in need of reconstruction.

“Once complete, drivers can look forward to smoother journeys and far fewer roadworks on the road for many years to come.”

The council said a series of road improvements were taking shape in Burton-upon-Trent, including those at Station Road, Clay Mills, Ashby Road, Wetmore Road and Hawkins Lane.

Further resurfacing works on Horninglow Road North in the vicinity of A38 overbridge, between Horninglow Croft and Farm Road will be completed shortly, it added.

Other schemes at A511 Swan junction, Horninglow Street/Guild Street junction and phase two of Horninglow Road North between Calais Road and Dover Road are also planned for later this year.
