County council agrees £40m road maintenance list

A list of roads and footpaths to be prioritised for maintenance across Cambridgeshire has been approved by the county council.
They include spending £552,000 on resurfacing part of Newmarket Road, Cambridge, £420,000 on resurfacing roads in an estate in Wisbech and £1,241,400 improving the "worst sections" of the carriageway of Chatteris Road in Somersham.
Cambridgeshire County Council said it would invest £40m in road maintenance, in addition to government funding, external.
The chair of its highways and transport committee, Liberal Democrat Alex Beckett, said this was "double pretty much what we would normally spend", but added it was "never going to be enough to do everything".
The work will begin in the new financial year and run until April 2025, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The council is run by a joint administration of Liberal Democrats, Labour and independent members.
There were many other roads in the county in need of fixing that were not on the list, according to some councillors that attended the sign-off meeting.
Conservative Alan Sharp said it would be useful for councillors and the public to see a list of all the roads that had been considered for repairs.
Mr Beckett said: "This investment, while it is double pretty much what we would normally spend on highways maintenance, it still only affects about 1% of the network, so it is never going to be enough to do everything and to reverse the decades of decline that we have had."
