A bin lorry caught fire while collecting rubbish, prompting an investigation.

The incident happened in the Warwick Road area of Carlisle at about 10:45 BST on Friday.

The vehicle was taken back to the depot, where the waste was removed and the fire put out.

Cumberland Council said no injuries had been reported.

"The vehicle is under observation for the time being," the local authority added.

"An investigation will be conducted next week, and our health and safety officers have been notified."

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said two engines attended and spent half an hour at the scene.

"Firefighters used two breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire," a spokesperson added.
