A "rare" painting by LS Lowry is expected to sell for up to £1m.

The painting of Senhouse Street in Maryport, Cumbria, is due to go under the hammer next month and is expected to fetch between £700,000 and £1m.

"Paintings of known views are much rarer in Lowry’s output, and this view is still recognizable today," a spokesman for auction house Christie's said.

In the 1955 oil on canvas, the Queen's Head Inn is recognisable on the bottom right corner of Senhouse Street.

The building became the Maryport Maritime Museum in the 1970s and was recently turned into an art gallery.

The museum is due to reopen in the refurbished Christchurch in Maryport, which was also painted by Lowry.

Called Fisherman's Church, it sold at auction in 2007 for £216,500, with a pencil version drawn in 1954 sold in 2020 for £81,000.
