New 20mph speed limits will be introduced in two parts of Leicester after plans were approved.

Leicester City Council officers approved an expansion of the speed limit scheme to St Joseph's and Netherhall, and the Morcom Drive area.

The move is part of the authority's plan to reduce accidents and encourage cycling and walking across the city.

Papers submitted to the council said the schemes will cost £86,000 to implement.

The introduction of the zones follows consultations with ward councillors, emergency services and residents.

Council papers show 81% of residents who responded to the consultation were in favour of the 20mph zones.

The new zones include Netherhall Road, Wigley Road and New Romney Crescent in St Joseph's and Netherhall.

They will also be enforced in Morcom Drive and three cul-de-sac roads accessed from the street.

The limits come into effect from Thursday.
