Work has started on a major £6m surface dressing scheme in Lincolnshire.

Resurfacing will be carried out on 177 miles (284 km) of roads across the county, officials said.

The county council said the scheme - described as the "biggest ever", would "really make a difference".

The work is expected to take about seven weeks to complete, depending on the weather.

Councillor Richard Davies, executive member for highways, said surface dressing was a cost-effective way of improving the road surface without having to dig up the road and re-lay it.

“The reality is that it costs about a tenth of other techniques, and it’s much quicker to get in place," he said.

“On top of that, we don’t always need a full road closure to do surface dressing which, naturally, really helps to cut down on traffic flow disruption."

He added it was the biggest surface dressing scheme ever undertaken by the authority, with work taking place across 227 sites and more than 26,000 tonnes of material being used.
