A popular music festival in Dumfries has been cancelled for 2024 due to escalating costs.

Organisers of the Doonhame Festival said a combination of financial issues and personal commitments meant the event could not continue.

Previous headliners for the two-day event have included the Fun Lovin' Criminals, Gun and the Waterboys.

The event was held on the grounds of the Crichton estate.

In a statement co-director Sandy Sweetman said the decision had followed "much deliberation".

He added: "Balancing ticket price with the rising costs of putting a festival together and looking at our own limited availability to dedicate the necessary time to the project sadly makes it unsustainable."

Mr Sweetman told BBC Scotland News that he would "never say never" about a possible return for the event in future years.

The Doonhame Festival was first held in 2019, but then cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It then returned in 2022 and was held for a third time in 2023.

Music fans in the region had previously enjoyed the Wickerman festival, which ended after the 2015 edition.
