An annual Christmas toy appeal has had its biggest ever year.

The 2023 Southampton Toy Appeal saw over 41,000 toys and gifts donated for children and young people in need.

Provided by local businesses, community organisations, charities and members of the public, the gifts were sorted and packed by volunteers before social workers distributed them to children across the city.

George, a Year 6 pupil who arranged a toy collection at his school, said he hoped the appeal "put a big smile on lots of faces on Christmas morning".

The appeal, in its 35th year, was organised by Southampton City Council with support from local organisations including Westquay Shopping Centre, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and Saints Foundation.

IKEA and Go! Southampton donated around 1,000 toys and gifts.

Pantomime star Christopher Biggins, the band McFly and Saints FC's Ryan Manning also took part in the appeal.

Donation points were placed around the city, including in Westquay Shopping Centre, the Sea City Museum, St Patricks Catholic Primary School, and libraries in Shirely, Lordshill, Bitterne and Portswood.

Some 582 volunteers sorted and packed the gifts.

Local businesses also contributed food to make over 100 hampers for care leavers.

Alex Winning, the council's cabinet member for children and learning, said he was "truly amazed by the incredible generosity shown by the community".

"Southampton is a very special place," he said.

"This year’s toy appeal demonstrates just how warm and kind-hearted it really is."
