Hundreds of motorbike riders have taken part in a charity's 47th annual toy run, collecting gifts for children who might otherwise go without.

The Star Bikers parade set off from the Bet365 Stadium in Stoke-on-Trent and took a route around the city, finishing at the King's Hall.

Organisers say it attracts more than 1,500 bikers each year, and is one of the most anticipated events along with the group's annual Easter egg run.

The toy run began in 1977, and over the years has seen growing crowds of people line the route to cheer on the riders.

While organisers say the event's origins are not entirely clear, most agree that the first run was organised as a collaboration between a group called the Harley Riders and another known as the Star Bikers, both based at the Star Inn, Hanley.

The first run, on 17 December 1977, was believed to be the first event of its kind in the UK.

Organisers said donations of gifts or cash were distributed to local children, and either children's charities or bike-related charities.
