A man has been arrested following reports of a person with a knife and a hammer in a public place.

Thames Valley Police said it was called at about 09:45 BST, leading to a "large police presence" in the Barracks Lane area of Cowley, in Oxford.

A 61-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, possession of a bladed article, and a public order offence.

Police said while the incident "may have been alarming for those who witnessed it" there was no ongoing risk to the public.

"Officers attended swiftly and safely resolved the incident," a spokesperson added.

Police have asked with anyone with information about the incident, or with videos or pictures, to get in contact.
