The roadworks in Croydon Road had been expected to be completed in December

Improvements to a key road in Surrey will not be completed until early 2025 due to several "unforeseen delays".

The work in Croydon Road, Caterham, include essential surface water repairs and extending and improving footpaths and installing new paving.

It started in February and was expected to be complete in early December.

But a combination of recent bad weather and other issues - including a diesel spill - have pushed back the completion.

Construction on the west side of Croydon Road is near completion while planting of the raingardens will be done in the autumn.

Work is due to start on the east side of the road, starting at the southern end and working north following the attached phasing plan.

Surrey County Council, which is carrying out the work in partnership with Tandridge District Council and Caterham Valley for You, said: "We are committed to finishing this project as quickly and safely as we can."

It blamed the delay on issues, including finding pipes and cables underground which were in the wrong places, and broken pipes which had to be repaired.

It added: "A damaged electricity cable also needed repairing urgently. Plus, bad weather and a diesel spill on the Caterham bypass have slowed construction down."
