A man has been charged after a 12-year-old boy was attacked in the street with a "metal item", police have said.

Greater Manchester Police said the boy had been walking down Stockport Road in Timperley at 18:30 GMT on Friday with two friends when a man got out of a car and chased them.

When the boy tried to run away, police said he was struck with a metallic object. A force spokesperson said the boy, who has since been discharged from hospital, had suffered serious back, hip and leg injuries.

Adithya Ramamoorthy, 21, of Vale Road in Timperley, has been charged with section 18 assault and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. He is due to appear before Manchester Magistrates' Court.
