Overnight downpours following a week of wet weather have brought further disruption to the West Midlands, with Monday morning floods seeing rail cancellations and firefighters having to rescue a stranded motorist.

Three appliances were sent to assist the driver in Condover, near Shrewsbury, just before 07:30 BST, said Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service. He was later taken to hospital after assessment at the scene.

Elsewhere in the county, flooding in Wellington led to blocked rail lines between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton - with cancellations and revised services on the route set to last until Wednesday.

Heavy rain across Shropshire and Staffordshire would last all day, the Met Office said.

Flood alerts are in place across the region.

In Worcestershire, Eckington Bridge and Jubilee Bridge in Fladbury were closed on Monday morning due to flooding, the county council said on X.

The Environment Agency described a "wet weather picture" in the West Midlands and advised people to check for alerts and not to enter floodwater.

It added many rivers in England remained at a high level and people should stay away from the swollen waterways and their banks.

Among the areas covered by flood alerts were the Severn Vyrnwy confluence, with flooding expected to affect low-lying land and roads by the river from the Welsh border at Llawnt to Shrawardine near Shrewsbury.

Shropshire Council said there were six flood alerts in force in the county, including catchment areas of the rivers Tern and Perry.

Heavy rain and flash floods caused disruption and damage in the county last week.

Replacement buses

The rail problems between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton had initially been estimated to last only until midday on Monday, later revised to all-day disruption before the forecast of a Wednesday reprieve.

To offset cancellations, a replacement bus service was operating, Transport for Wales and West Midlands Railway advised.

Customers may also use their tickets on Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway services via Crewe.

Buses were scheduled to leave Shrewsbury at half past every hour until midday and Wolverhampton at 41 minutes past each hour.

Rail services had only been running again for two days - Saturday and Sunday - following cancellations on Friday due to flooding at Wellington station.
