Village remembers with display of knitted poppies
- Published
A village is marking Remembrance Day with a display of more than 2,500 knitted poppies.
Fremington in north Devon has decorated its village green with the poppies, made by both experienced knitters and first-timers.
The collection was started a few years ago by two local women and has grown in size.
Chair of the Fremington and District Community Group, Frank Biederman, said the poppies are all displayed in different ways and "in different colours to represent the different groups of people and animals who made the ultimate sacrifice".
The collection was initially started by two local women, known only as Maggie and Biddy, and both are still involved.
The knitters have been making the poppies in their own time and then getting together to assemble the decorations.
Sandra Randall is one of the knitters and said: "We have had ladies' wine nights to sew them on to the netting.
"It's been good fun."
The group has been encouraging people in the village to start learning to knit now so they can contribute to the poppy display next year.
